現在普遍使用的方法仍是醫生通過顯微鏡分析結腸癌患者腫瘤，ICGI研究人員表示，透過人工智慧利用電腦將只需3分鐘進行評估，而且精度提高62%。這項新方法由ICGI的研發人員和實驗室工作團隊共同開發，運用AI的機器學習計算腸道癌症如何發展。運用電腦演算法進行預測，並經由分析1700萬張癌症樣本圖像，讓電腦學會如何確定腫瘤大小和攻擊性。
據ICGI研究人員表示，此項腸癌快篩技術可望在今年夏天啟用，並希望這個方法能進一步運用到其他癌症。腸癌是挪威最常見的癌症，2018年有超過4,400名挪威人確診結腸癌和直腸癌。
